Asphalt and Concrete: Hot Surface Expansion and Your Trailer

Most people think about heat and their trailer in terms of the interior, keeping a camper cool, protecting an RV fridge, that kind of thing. Fewer people think about what's happening directly underneath, where the tires meet a surface that can be 40 to 60 degrees hotter than the air temperature on a sunny summer day.

That surface heat does real things to your trailer. Here's what's actually happening and what it means for how you park, store, and tow.


Asphalt Gets Hotter Than You Think

On a 90-degree day, asphalt can reach surface temperatures well above 140°F. Concrete runs cooler under the same conditions, it reflects more solar radiation and doesn't absorb heat the way asphalt's dark surface does. That difference matters more than people expect when you're parked or stored for any length of time.

At high enough temperatures, asphalt softens. It's designed to handle heat, but extended exposure on a hot day can leave it soft enough that a stationary tire under load slowly sinks a fraction of an inch, or that switching positions leaves faint tire impressions behind. This is more pronounced on older or lower-quality asphalt, and worse the longer a trailer sits in one spot without moving.

If you're storing a trailer on an asphalt driveway or lot through the height of summer, occasionally shifting its position, even a few feet, helps prevent the tires from settling into the same soft spot repeatedly over weeks of heat exposure.


Tire Pressure Climbs With Surface and Ambient Heat

Tire pressure isn't static, it rises and falls with temperature, and both the ambient air temperature and the surface your trailer is sitting or rolling on contribute to that.

As a rule, tire pressure increases roughly 1 PSI for every 10°F of temperature increase. On a hot asphalt surface, where the tire itself is absorbing radiant heat from below in addition to ambient air temperature, pressure can climb several PSI above your cold baseline over the course of a hot afternoon. Add highway speed and friction heat from actual driving, and the increase compounds further.

This is normal and isn't something to panic about, tires are rated with a margin for exactly this kind of fluctuation. What it does mean is that you should always set your tire pressure when the tires are cold, ideally first thing in the morning before the trailer has moved or sat in direct sun. Checking pressure midday on hot asphalt and adjusting down to your target number will leave you underinflated once things cool off, which creates its own set of problems, uneven wear, more flex in the sidewall, and reduced load capacity.


Concrete Has Its Own Issue: Expansion Joints

Concrete handles heat differently than asphalt, but it's not heat-immune either. Concrete slabs expand as they heat up, and the joints between sections, the lines you see cut into most concrete driveways, pads, and parking areas, exist specifically to give that expansion somewhere to go without cracking the slab.

For trailer owners, this matters mostly when it comes to leveling. A trailer parked across an expansion joint, or on a slab section that's heaved or settled unevenly relative to its neighbor, can end up slightly out of level in ways that aren't obvious by eye. If you've ever set up on what looked like a flat concrete pad and ended up needing more leveling correction than expected, an expansion joint or slab settling is often the reason.

Check level with an actual level or your RV's leveling app rather than trusting a visually flat-looking surface, especially on older concrete pads where joints have had years to shift.


What This Means for Long-Term Storage

If your trailer sits in one spot for weeks or months at a time through summer, a few adjustments reduce wear from surface heat:

Use leveling blocks or tire cradles under each wheel rather than letting tires sit directly on hot asphalt for extended periods. This reduces direct heat transfer into the tire and helps prevent the tire from settling into softened asphalt.

If possible, store on concrete rather than asphalt for anything beyond a few weeks. The lower surface temperature reduces both tire heat buildup and the risk of asphalt deformation under stationary weight.

Rotate or shift the trailer's position periodically during extended storage. Even a small shift prevents the same contact points from bearing all the heat and weight stress for the entire season.


Towing in Extreme Heat

When you're actually towing rather than just parked, surface heat adds to a tire's overall heat load alongside friction from rolling and ambient air temperature. This is one of the reasons blowouts cluster on the hottest days of summer, it's not usually one single factor, but the combination of high ambient heat, hot pavement, and the friction of sustained highway speed all loading onto a tire at once.

If you're towing on an especially hot day, check tire pressure and tread condition before you leave, watch for any unusual vibration or pulling that might indicate a developing issue, and take breaks on long stretches to let things cool rather than pushing straight through in the worst of the afternoon heat if your schedule allows it.


Moving a Trailer on a Hot Surface

One practical, often-overlooked effect of hot pavement: it makes manually moving a trailer physically harder. Softened asphalt creates more rolling resistance than a cool, firm surface, and tires that have expanded slightly from heat can feel different, sometimes sluggish, sometimes harder to get rolling from a dead stop, compared to the same trailer on a cooler day.

Surface heat isn't just a comfort issue, it changes tire pressure, affects how trailers sit during storage, and adds real load to tires during a hot tow. Check pressure cold, choose concrete over asphalt for extended stationary storage when you have the option, and build in a little extra caution on the hottest driving days of the season.

The trailer doesn't know it's summer. The pavement underneath it does, and it's worth planning around that.
