What Size Hitch Ball Do You Need?

What Size Hitch Ball Do You Need?

Among all the new gadgets and technology, few components are more important to safe towing than the venerable hitch ball. It bonds the trailer with the tow vehicle, ensuring a rock-solid connection, smooth turning, and safe passage. But, there are different sizes to choose from and you can’t afford to be wrong. Fortunately, we’ll clear up the confusion so you can hit the road with confidence. So let’s answer the question - what size hitch ball do you need?

Common Hitch Ball Sizes

While it’s simply a ball-shaped attachment that connects the trailer to the vehicle, having the correct hitch ball size can be the difference between years of safe travel and hazardous situations every time you hit the road. Luckily, there are only a handful of trailer hitch ball sizes, which are detailed below.

A 1-⅞ inch ball is for light-duty use and is often found on sedans and small SUVs. As the smallest of the group, towing capacity is limited to 2000-3500 lbs. The 2-inch ball is the most common hitch ball size because of its versatility and capability. Some 2-inch hitch balls can tow over 10,000 lbs so most recreational towing is within reach. The 2-5/16 inch hitch ball is a great heavy-duty choice for applications such as towing horse trailers, and they have towing capacities of up to 30,000 lbs. Last but not least, the 3-inch hitch ball is used for gooseneck towing and major travel trailers, significantly reducing the number of users.

Hitch Ball Measurements

There are a few key dimensions to understand regarding your hitch ball. If you already have a ball mount you can grab a tape measure to verify specs. Most important is the diameter of the ball, which is how they are categorized. The ball shank, which is the narrower threaded portion underneath the hitch ball, is measured by both diameter and length (top to bottom height). Lastly, the rise is measured as the space between the top of the shank and the bottom of the ball.

Choosing The Hitch Ball For Your Needs

Choosing a ball mount starts with matching the hitch ball’s diameter to the coupler. Couplers typically indicate the correct trailer ball size, so always check there first. Knowing the weight of your trailer is also mandatory. This allows you to understand your capacity needs and get the correct tongue weight. Note that hitch ball weight ratings vary - even for those with similar specs. Always check the weight capacities and never assume, especially when towing large trailers. If you’re choosing a new ball mount for an existing hitch, you’ll also want to match the shank diameter with the hole size. You’ll want to check these key measurements before the hitch slides into the receiver so you’re less likely to forget.

While it’s critical to choose the right size hitch ball, remember your towing capacity is only as high as your weakest link. For example, if you have a hitch ball with a 14,000 lb weight rating paired with a receiver hitch rating of 4000 lbs, you shouldn’t tow more than 4000 lbs.

At the end of the day, a basic understanding of the different ball mount applications sets you up for making the right decision. By understanding your needs and having equipment capable of pulling your trailer, you’ll avoid common trailer mishaps and be ready for years of towing.
