The Benefits of Using an Adjustable Hitch for Towing

They’re one of the most versatile pieces of equipment you can own if you tow multiple trailers. For the type of person who stays busy and seeks adventure, an adjustable trailer hitch is essential because it gives you the ability to pull just about anything with a single hitch. Let’s take a deep dive to uncover all the benefits of using an adjustable hitch.

The Benefits of Using an Adjustable Hitch for Towing

At first glance, it’s clear what separates an adjustable hitch from other types of hitches - it’s a better overall towing experience. To adjust the hitch height all you need to do is remove a pin or two and slide it to the desired setting.

Versatility

If you haven’t towed a whole lot, that might not seem like a big deal, but it saves a ton of time and frustration over the long haul. To truly appreciate an adjustable hitch, we have to look at it through the lens of a standard hitch. Let’s take a common example - say you’re the outdoorsy type who has a camper for family vacations, a boat, and a smaller trailer for projects and hauling a four-wheeler. Odds are you’re going to need a different hitch for each one. Without an adjustable hitch, that means you’ll have three hitches to keep track of, maintain, and store. And if you’re ever tasked with towing something else, you might need yet another hitch.

Future Towing Options

With an adjustable trailer hitch, you eliminate the clutter of multiple hitches while keeping options open for nearly any type of trailer. If you’re not sure what you’ll be towing in the future, they’re a no-brainer. Whether you’re the type who is constantly changing and upgrading toys or you’re the go-to guy when all your friends and family need help towing, an adjustable hitch makes life easier. Another aspect that many people overlook is the fact that they are truly a lifelong investment because they add versatility as you change towing vehicles.

Weight Ratings

Chances are the adjustable hitch will have a higher weight rating as well. For example, all of our adjustable trailer hitches at Trailer Valet have a weight rating of at least 10,000 pounds. Additionally, the vast majority of adjustable hitches have multiple ball sizes that you can easily rotate in less than a minute. Speaking of rotation, you can often move the entire adjustable hitch upside down to increase hitch heights, which opens up even more towing applications. Of course, be sure to check with the manufacturer to ensure that’s a safe option.
It wouldn’t be fair to ignore the cons of adjustable hitches. Fortunately, there aren’t many. The first con is the cost - expect to pay roughly three to six times the price of a standard ball mount hitch. Like any product, it’s critical to evaluate the build quality and individual components. There’s obviously more moving parts with adjustable hitches, so cheaper, inferior hitches often struggle to fend off corrosion. This might not seem like a big deal, but when you combine it with inferior manufacturing tolerances, you’ll be wishing you had a no-nonsense standard hitch.
As long as you’re willing to make the investment in a quality adjustable hitch, you’ll experience all the versatility they’re known for. For anyone with different towing needs and a thirst for adventure, an adjustable hitch is the ticket to years of good times with family and friends.
